Talk with Titia Ketelaar about the British

Join us for a talk with former UK correspondent Titia Ketelaar, who worked six years for NRC Handelsblad in London.

Titia Ketelaar just published her book “Mind the Gap”, in which she discusses what British people make so British. Why do they keep having the “living on an island” feeling? The title of the book refers to both the well-known sound in the tube as well as the differences within the British society.
There is not only a great distance between the British and those in continental Europe, but also within the British society itself: urban versus rural areas, rich versus poor,  the difference between the English/Scots/Welsh and Northern Irish.

If an Englishman says something like “very interesting“, a Dutch person will hear: “ah, he is impressed!” while the Englishman actually means: “This is clearly nonsense”.
If he says “not bad“, he is actually trying to say that something is good. And “With the greatest respect” means more like “You are an idiot”. Titia Ketelaar will share her love for the United Kingdom, explains the differences between the British and the Dutch and will touch upon Brexit as well. Event details
